The kitchen island was a nice safe place for me to put Molly while I prepared a meal. Not so with Little Leighton. He will sit there for a little while, but it is a more dynamic experience. Nothing is safe at any distance, and I certainly can’t leave a knife on the counter when I turn around, even for a moment.
Just the other night I was preparing tacos for dinner and had prepared the cabbage, radishes, tomatoes, and cilantro; all of which were laid out on the countertop. I stepped outside to turn the chicken on the grill (only 10 feet away), and as I entered the house I noticed the dogs frantically scampering around on the floor – usually indicating that Leighton had tossed them some food. My first thought was that he had tossed the dogs some of the Pirate’s Booty he was munching, as usual. Then I notice a bit of cabbage on the floor. And then I looked up. There was cabbage everywhere. He had slung it all over the kitchen.
In addition to making a mess, climbing on top of furniture and standing is a favorite activity. This happens all over the house and at daycare. He especially likes to stand at his chair at the kitchen, and even to eat ice cream. He hasn’t fallen off anything too far – yet. It will happen.
